Guyoil announces reduction for gas, increases for kero, gasoil

Effective from today, the price of gasoline will be reduced, while the prices of gasoil and kerosene will be increased by the Guyana Oil Company (Guyoil).

According to a press statement issued by the company, gasoil and kerosene prices will be increased by $5 per litre, while gasoline would be reduced by $2 per litre, which is expected to have a positive impact on motorists.

The statement explained that the reason behind the increases in the prices for gasoil and kerosene is directly related to the acquisition cost from the source, which is consistent with the rising fuel prices on the world market.

“Guyoil had been absorbing these fluctuations but recent movements have made these adjustments necessary,” the statement added.

In reference to the drop in gasoline, the statement said, “It ably demonstrates Guyoil’s commitment to act in the interest of all Guyanese and the nation as a whole.” A contractor who is owed $2M on a construction contract in Barakara, has agreed to redo the access road and other parts of the project before receiving his outstanding payment, according to Region Six Chairman, David Armogan.

The project which was estimated at $7.5M, involved the construction of a revetment outside the compound which houses the nursery and primary school, the health centre and the community centre in Barakara, located 50 miles up the Canje River, Berbice.

During the process a decision was taken that some residents would assess and sign off on the work, that it was up to the required standard, before the contractor was paid in full. However, the residents refused to sign off on the job, contending that it was not done properly.

According to information gathered, the contractors’ machines destroyed the access road leading to the compound where the revetment had been built, and they were other works which needed to be redone.

Region Six Chairman Armogan told Stabroek News yesterday that the contractor had received $5.5M in payment, and was owed a further $2M. He explained that the Region had written to, and had also had dialogue with the contractor who has agreed to redo the access road as well as fill in the necessary areas with dirt, to fulfill the residents’ demands for their signing off on the project.

However, Armogan did not take lightly persons questioning why the contractor had been awarded other projects if his work was not up to the required standard, and strongly insisted that this had been done by the Central Tender Board. The work will be completed according to Armogan, when the contractor carries out other projects in Barakara in the near future.
