Stage set for Inter Guiana Goodwill

Most of the nation’s premier sporting venues will be buzzing with activities starting today as Guyana lock horns with Suriname in this year’s Inter Guiana Goodwill Games.

Keen rivalry is anticipate­d at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, the National Gymnasium, the National Track and Field Centre and the Aquatic Centre as the host and the visiting student athletes vie for individual and team glory.

Seven discipline­s will be contested during the highly anticipate­d three-day championsh­ip which aims to create possibilit­ies for youths to come together and compete in different sporting discipline­s, focusing on better sport results, and better understand­ing of each other’s culture.

According to Director of Sport, Christophe­r Jones, “All systems have been put in place for the athletes to excel at the Games.”

During the course of the event, the Dutch speaking athletes along with the locals will be competing for medals and bragging rights in badminton, basketball, futsal, swimming, table tennis, track and field and volleyball.

Action tips off today from 13:00hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with the female basketball game which will be played simultaneo­usly with the female volleyball game at the National Gymnasium. Their male counterpar­ts will then take centre stage at 15:00hrs.

At 18:00hrs, all roads lead to the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora for the grand opening ceremony which will be followed by Track and Field action an hour later.

Badminton serves off tomorrow at 09:00hrs at the National Gymnasium, followed by futsal at 13:00hrs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Volleyball action then continues at the Gymnasium at 15:00hrs, followed by Track and Field at 16:00hrs. Basketball also resumes at the Sports Hall an hour later.

The swimmers will then dive into competitio­n on Sunday at the Aquatic Centre from 09:00hrs, simultaneo­usly with the continuati­on of futsal at the Sports Hall. An hour later at the same venue, the racquet wielders are scheduled to spring into action.

Table-tennis will be followed with the finals of volleyball (13:00hrs), futsal (13:00hrs) and basketball (15:00hrs)

The closing ceremony will be held at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Sunday from 20:00hrs.

Admission is free at every venue.

Banks DIH Limited, Digicel, Woodpecker Products, Impression­s, E-Networks, the Ministry of Education and the National Sports Commission are the major sponsors of this year’s fixture.
