Male volleyball team wins, female team loses
Guyana’s volleyball teams endured mixed fortunes yesterday with the male Team winning and the female team losing against Suriname on the opening day of the 2016 Inter-Guiana Games (IGG) yesterday afternoon at the National Gymnasium.
The male team opened its account with a 3-0 sweep of Suriname who were outplayed both offensively and defensively during the three sets.
However, the Guyana female team went down to the Dutch ladies 0-3 losing 12-25, 12-25, and 13-25.
It was a completely different scenario in the men’s encounter.
The defending champs, led by Samuel Fraser, Xavier Lambert and Klondyke Rodney, flexed their muscles against the visitors.
The Guyanese were aggressive in serving and spiking which resulted in a 25-14, 25-17 and 25-10 sweep giving the male team a huge edge heading into today’s second encounter which begins at 15:00hrs.
Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) President John Flores told Stabroek Sport after the first round of matches that he was certain the women would bounce back while adding that he expects the men to dominate in the remaining two games.
“Today cemented all our expectations because the males played a lot of volleyball in Trinidad and Suriname and they are playing well as a team so I absolutely expect them to dominate in the two other games.”
“The women are good individually but they are not that familiar with each other because they were selected from across the country and had little time to gel. But they watched a lot of the men play so hopefully they will improve over the next two games.”
