—but has plans to stage National Elite Camp before selecting final CARIFTA squad

The Athletic Association of Guyana will lean on the National Sports Commission for support but the athletes who will make the final cut for the National Elite Camp and the CARIFTA Games will be chosen by the AAG.
This was reiterated by president of the association, Aubrey Hutson who cleared the air on the suggested list which was released by Edison Jefford, a commissioner on the NSC in the aftermath of ‘Nationals’.
Hutson, who is currently in Argentina attending the International Amateur Athletic Federation Youth Meeting, told this publication yesterday that: “The article as stated is Mr. Jefford’s suggested list, and his approach to CARIFTA preparations.”
Hutson added that “The AAG will be invited to CARIFTA, not the NSC. The selection of athletes for the camp is a function of the AAG, but we will definitely depend on the NSC for its support.”
The AAG head noted that there will be a National Elite Camp next month but a final squad for CARIFTA will be shortlisted following the traditional trials in March.
Hutson then told this publication that following his return on Tuesday, there will be a Coaches retreat on December 17 where the 2017 calendar of activities will be discussed and planned. He noted that meets and camps will be high on the agenda for the junior athletes to peak and medal at the Caribbean’s most prestigious track and field fixture.
Curaçao will host the 46th edition of the CARIFTA Games scheduled April 15, 16 and 17, 2017.
During the Games which traditionally has two age categories: under-18 and under-20 for both boys and girls, there will be as many as 150 different individual events.
