UN, Ecowas intervention a victory for democracy in The Gambia

-

Dear Editor, I have been following with interest developments in the West African country of The Gambia where the incumbent President has refused to relinquish power despite having lost the presidential elections in certified free and fair elections. As the matter now stands the country has two Presidents: Mr Adama Barrow who is the duly elected and recognized President by the international community, and Mr Yahya Jammeh, who from all indications is on the verge of being forcibly removed from office thanks to military and moral support from neighbouring Senegal and the entire Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas).

This is indeed a victory for democracy, not only for The Gambia but for the entire African continent, and will serve as a lesson to others that it cannot be business as usual when the democratic will of the African people is being trampled upon.

The United Nations Security Council and Ecowas must be commended for the timely and forthright intervention they have made in pursuance of democracy and constitutional rule in The Gambia. Yours faithfully, Hydar Ally
