Expert urges realistic expectations of oil sector
International expert Brian McShane has urged Guyanese to have realistic expectations of the emerging oil and gas sector.
McShane was speaking last Wednesday evening at the second public lecture hosted by the Guyana Oil and Gas Association (GOGA).
The lecture, held at a packed Herdmanston Lodge, saw an overview of oil and gas subsurface operations presented by McShane, international oil and gas expert and current Senior Vice- President of the Americas region of INTECSEA.
During his hour-long presentation, McShane touched on four aspects of subsurface operations: deep water projects; world tours of offshore developments; sunset development and key components; and delivery challenges.
He also took the time to answer questions, much to the satisfaction of the audience as several persons used the opportunity to pose questions about Guyana’s developing oil and gas industry, not specific to his presentation. McShane, in his responses, stated that such questions would be better answered by the designated government agencies.
Nonetheless, he urged the anxious audience to be realistic with their expectation of the emerging sector and that emphasis should be placed on collaboration between the relevant stakeholders so as to ensure the development of the sector.
The GOGA has expressed its commitment to hosting such lectures as a means of engaging the public on the development of the oil and gas industry in the country. “The series is intended to create an open forum for the discussion of the development of a viable industry. GOGA has engaged and will continue to engage international and local industry experts from the government, corporate and academic sectors; who will share with the Guyanese public their experience and recommendations on the sustainable and beneficial management of the industry,” GOGA has said.
