Trio remanded over John St AK-47, ammo find
The three men who were arrested after police found an AK-47 assault rifle and a 9mm handgun at a Campbellville, Georgetown residence, were yesterday remanded to prison after being read charges for the alleged possession of the firearms and matching ammunition.
Lloyd Roberts, Andre Pollydore, 29 and Tion Alleyne, 30 all appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty to answer to four charges; two for the possession of the guns and two for the possession of the ammunition, while not being the holder of firearm licences.
The men, all said to be miners, were alleged to have been in possession of an AK-47 rifle, 60 rounds of 7.62X39 ammunition, a 9mm pistol and 20 matching rounds on January 22 at Lot 81 John Street, Campbellville.
Roberts, Pollydore and Alleyne pleaded not guilty to the charges read to them.
Attorney Nigel Hughes, who appeared on behalf of Roberts, told the court that his client does not reside at the residence where the firearms and ammunition were found. He added that Roberts visited the residence after he received a call informing him to collect documents from a family member.
It was not long after his arrival at the home that the police arrived.
The court heard that Roberts and his family have been receiving threats to their lives as it relates to gold traders in the country for the past three months. He further stated that since his arrest, Robert’s common-law wife continues to receive threatening calls from persons promising to end the lives of her and family members.
Police Prosecutor Seon Blackman objected to bail being granted to Roberts, while saying that he spontaneously told the police that he was responsible for everything and that he had rented the house.
Bail was also objected to in relation to the other defendants, who were also represented by Hughes, after the prosecutor mentioned the alleged statement made by Roberts.
Magistrate McGusty denied the trio bail and adjourned the matter to February 14.
‘A’ Division Commander Clifton Hicken on Sunday told Stabroek News that ranks from Guyana Police Force Headquarters, Eve Leary and his division acted on intelligence and went to the property to investigate, resulting in the discovery. He added that two vehicles which were parked at the home were also impounded.
