Leitch, Matadeen triumph in Dorsett Memorial road race -Fun Day to be held at a later date
Delroy Leitch won the male open category and Swarswattie Matadeen the female category at the seventh annual Desmond Dorsett Memorial road race held recently at the Number 53 Sports Complex in Berbice.
Demarcus Williams and Naomi Bourne were second in the male and female open categories respectively.
The top U 19 male runner was Austin Gray with Devon Joseph placing second, Thaddeaus Donald, third and Enoch Rutherford, fourth.
Among the U15 runners Deandre Shabazz won from Jahvon Angel while Jahiel Jeffrey was third and Nigel Prince fourth.
The first female to cross the finishing line was Lisa Douglas.
The outstanding performers were presented with cash, trophies, medals, ribbons, T- Shirts and other memorabilia compliments of the Dorsett Family of No 50 Village, Leeds Corentyne, Berbice and other well-wishers. Certificates of appreciation and participation were presented to all the participants. The top finishers from the Leeds, No51, Union and the No53 catchment areas were presented with special prizes.
The event was billed as a road race and fun day but because of the inclement weather the fun day was not held.
Coordinator of the event and wife of the late Desmond Dorsett, Waveney Dorsett, told the media that the fun day will be held on a later date during the year.
A native of East Canje, the late Desmond Dorsett was a Detective Superintendent of Police who was an ardent sports fan and who excelled in cricket and athletics.
After retiring from the Guyana Police Force, the late Desmond Dorsett migrated to the United States of America but would usually return with his family to do charity and community work.
His wife, a retired head mistress and community activist continues in the same vein and is the spearhead of the activity.
She told the media that she was grateful to and would like to express special thanks to Divisional Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ian Amsterdam and his top brass including Deputy Commander Errol Watts and the officers of the three police sub-divisions for their support and assistance.
