- By Duncan Saul

With the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) season set to commence Sunday with the Stag Beer Elite League leaders tournament, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Fruta Conquerors have expressed confidence ahead of the meeting.

The two teams as well as Victoria Kings and Buxton United are scheduled to compete in the tournament which only features the top four teams in the Elite League standings.

Number one seed GDF will tackle second ranked Fruta Conquerors with the winner progressing directly to the final. The loser of that aforesaid match will faceoff with the victor of the contest between third ranked Victoria Kings and fourth seed Buxton United.

Speaking at a press conference held at the GFF’s headquarters, GDF headcoach Bilaal Nantambo said: “We have identified a formation we want to work with and we will continue to work with that because there is always room for improvement.

“We weren’t really interrupted by the transfer so we didn’t have a major set of reshuffling to do, just the lengthy break that took its toll” he added.

Similarly, GDF captain Delwyn Fraser said: “We are just preparing ourselves. Keeping our focus so when the league starts, we will come out victorious and play the same brand of football we played last year and continue on our winning ways.”

Fruta Conquerors interim head-coach David Headley said: “We are gelling because most of the players returned home. Their prodigal sons are coming back home. Most of the players with the exception of Konata Mannings would have played in the first season with Fruta or played some part with the team over the years”.

Also, Fruta Conquerors skipper Derick Carter said “Our preparation going into this half of the league is much better than how we prepared in the first half. In terms of experience, our team is much more boosted whilst in the first half, we were more youthful and our training session is much more intense”.

Meanwhile Stag Beer representative Colin Stuart said: “Over the first half, it was a success for us and we are actually looking forward to better and more support in the second half.”

He revealed that the company will be giving away a Gillette hamper valued at $GY5000 as a gate prize as, well as the usual half-time giveaways through their skilled contests.

Absent from the press conference were representatives of Buxton United and Victoria Kings.
