A young miner yesterday found himself facing a charge that he wounded his grandfather, who now faces the possibility of suffering a disability.

Delroy Williams, 24, was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding Clifton Williams, on February 23rd, at Co-op Farm, Mahdia, with the intent to maim, disfigure or disable.

He was also read a second charge which stated that on the same date and at the very location, he unlawfully assaulted Luciana Williams so as to cause her actual bodily harm. He pleaded not guilty to both charges when he was arraigned before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown.

According to Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Delroy was spoken to by his grandfather, Clifton, concerning a house, which angered the young man. As a result, Jones said, he hit his grandfather to his head with a piece of wood.

The court was told that the assault prompted the intervention of the accused’s sister but she was also hit.

It also heard that although Clifton has since been discharged from the hospital, the possibility of him suffering a disability is likely based on the injuries he received.

Prosecutor Jones did not object to bail but ask that it be substantial if granted.

Prior to granting the defendant his release on $75,000 bail, the magistrate ordered that the prosecutor to advise the complainants to take out a protection order against the defendant.

The man was ordered to not go within 50ft of either complainant and to remove from the home until the completion of the trial. It was also recommended that he undergo counselling for anger management.

The case was adjourned until April 18th, when it is to be heard at the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court.
