Firefighters save Coldingen house

-

The Guyana Fire Service has come in for praise after firefighters saved a house from going up in flames at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara on Thursday night.

While the origin of the fire is unknown, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause.

Stabroek News was told that around 11.45pm on Thursday, a passerby noticed smoke coming from a tightly secured twostorey house. He immediately contacted the Guyana Fire Service and firefighters soon arrived and managed to out the fire.

However, there was extensive damage to the interior of the house and most of the valuables were said to have been destroyed. At the time of the fire, no one was at home. Firefighters had been forced to break the doors to gain entry into the house. Efforts to contact the occupants, said to be a couple, were unsuccessful yesterday.

When Stabroek News visited the property, the gate to the premises was tightly secured.

Most of the windows and lights, including a chandelier in the veranda area, appeared to have been shattered.

Residents of the area praised the Guyana Fire Service for a job well done.

The electricity supply to the area, they also said, was disrupted due to the fire but the situation was fixed by yesterday morning.
