Advice sought on theft of passenger’s phone at airport

-

A file in relation to last week’s cell phone theft at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri, involving a female special constabulary rank has been sent to the Chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for recommendations.

This is according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum who informed Stabroek News on Tuesday that the file was completed and sent to the DPP. He said once legal advice is given, the special constabulary rank is likely to be charged.

Around 7am last Tuesday, the special constabulary rank stationed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri was arrested for stealing a phone belonging to an outbound passenger.

This newspaper was told that the incident unfolded while the female passenger who was about to depart for Canada was going through security checks.

While at the airport security checkpoint, the passenger placed her Samsung Galaxy phone down before proceeding through the scanner. Subsequently, she discovered her phone was missing and raised an alarm. Airport officials were alerted and the police were called in.

An investigation was immediately launched and police reviewed surveillance footage, which recorded the special constabulary rank pocketing the phone. She was taken into custody.

Although she initially denied the allegation, after further interrogation she admitted to the offence and reportedly told the police that after taking the phone she called her boyfriend, who is a member of the Guyana Defence Force, and handed over the phone to him.

The boyfriend was contacted and he handed over the cell phone to the police.
