Entry refused to tuna shipment
The Government Analyst-Food and Drug Department (GAFDD) on Tuesday said that in collaboration with the Customs and Trade Administration (CTA) it had refused entry to a shipment of 2,000 cartons of tuna labelled `Buiwick’ from China.
The name `Buiwick’ would be seen to be trading on the wellknown `Brunswick’ trademark. Each carton contained 48x170g and a release from the GA-FDD said that the exact address of the manufacturer in the country of origin was not stated.
These defects put the shipment in contravention of the Food and Drug Act and its regulations.
A statement from GA-FDD said that according to the Food and Drug Act chapter 34:03 part (ii) section (6) this label is prohibited as it is false, misleading and deceptive. Further, the product’s label was found to be inadequate according to the Food and Drug regulations of 1977, regulation 18 part (2) (a) clause (iii) – Labels.
The GA-FDD said it has since written to the CTA to suspend the processing of documents of a known third party agent out of the United States that knowingly and deliberately facilitates the importing of substandard items into Guyana or with inadequate labels. The statement said that the company would have also on many occasions exported items to Guyana in the absence of a Free Sale Certificate in the prescribed form from the country of origin.
