Beharry sweetens Hong Kong Sevens team ahead of North America trip
Edward B. Beharry and Companies has once again answered the call of the Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU).
Following sponsorship of the national men’s 7s rugby team last year which enabled the ‘Green Machine’ to clinch their eighth Caribbean championship in Trinidad, the long-standing benefactor of the union will now assist the GRFU with their expenses in North America.
During a simple but meaningful ceremony yesterday at the entity’s boardroom in Charlotte street, its Brand Manager, Monique Tiwari presented an undisclosed but substantial sum in the form of a cheque to team Captain, Ryan Gonsalves.
The funds will be used to offset expenses of the ruggers and officials during the five-day training and competition camp in New York ahead of the prestigious HSBC Hong Kong 7s which kicks off on April 7. The contingent will depart on Sunday. “We are pleased to support this team once again and we wish them success in Hong Kong,” said Tiwari.
President of the Union, Peter Green and Gonsalves thanked Tiwari on behalf of the company for their continued commitment to the national outfit.
Green also encouraged the government to match or exceed the funding that private entities have given to the team.
Meanwhile, Gonsalves stated that his charges will use the time in New York to “get up to game speed” since the pace of the game in Hong Kong will be “much faster than what we are accustomed to in the Caribbean.”
Coach, Kenneth Grant-Stuart added that the time spent in the ‘Big Apple’ will also see the players “ironing out kinks and working on strengths.”
In Hong Kong, Guyana will be in Pool G along with Spain, Papua New Guinea, and Uruguay.
Guyana’s squad reads: Gonsalves (Captain), Rupert Giles, Vallon Adams, Richard Staglon, Rondell McArthur, Rickford Cummings, Peabo Hamilton, Claudius Butts, Patrick King, Avery Corbin, Ronald Mayers, Dwayne Schroeder and Blaise Bailey.
The officials are Grant-Stuart (Coach), Robin Roberts (Manager) and Physiotherapist, Barrington Browne.
