Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar for stage on May 3
The search is on for the cutest baby 18 months and younger in Guyana through a photograph competition organized by GEM magazine in collaboration with Pampers baby diapers, solely distributed in Guyana by ANSA McAL Trading Limited.
The annual competition, titled ‘Cutest Baby Photo Contest, started in in 2014 and according to a release from GEM the contest has “grown tremendously, since the requirements to participate are minimal and the Facebook phase garners much attention.”
A release from the magazine stated that to be eligible the child must be a resident of Guyana and be present if they are among the top ten finalists collecting prizes. Unlike other years two photographs must be submitted.
According to the release the 1st prize will include a cover appearance on GEM along with six months’ supply of Pampers baby diapers. The ten finalists will be featured in the magazine and receive a hamper full of goodies, compliments of Pampers.
Interested parents or guardians are asked to submit two high quality photos one for the competition and another with the baby posing with any Pampers product. They would also have to submit the baby’s name, nickname, birth date, gender, birth weight, favourite toy, favourite baby food, parents’ names, Godparents’ names and contact information to baby @gemmagonline.com.
“Finalists will be chosen based on poise, quality of picture, completeness of the required information and the most ‘likes’ from the Facebook phase of the contest. Each child will be judged by a closed panel of judges comprising of representatives from the sponsors,” the release said.
The submission deadline is midnight of Friday April 7, 2017. With the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) exams just around the corner, literature students will be exposed to some practical assistance when GEMS Theatre Productions in collaboration with the National School of Theatre Arts and Drama presents one of Shakespeare’s plays, Julius Caesar, for schools come May 3.
According to a press release the stage production is expected to serve as a refresher for those students before their final exams on May 12. “Attending a Shakespearean production is a memorable experience for students,” the release said.
Director, Subraj Singh is handling the arenastyle setting for the play with great skill, as the release said he is employing theatre in the round techniques with no blackouts during scene changes. The action moves from one setting to the other, with much efficiency, utilizing the large space available at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The play will be staged at the sports hall on May 3 from 10 am and schools attending are asked to be on time. Admission is $500 for students but adults are welcome to attend but will have to pay $1,000 for ticket.
The play was written in 1599 but not published until after Shakespeare died in 1616 and according to the release Julius Caesar is considered to be his greatest tragedy when compared to King Lear, Othello and Macbeth. The play, it said, is very relevant today and is being studied in the classroom for English B for the final term.
Julius Caesar is one of the two plays for the fifth formers writing the upcoming CSEC examinations in English B. The Ministry of Education, through the Allied Arts Department, has given its approval for this presentation.
