Fire damages Campbellville building

-

A swift response from the Guyana Fire Service resulted in the upper flat of an apartment building being saved but the occupants of the bottom flat are counting their losses.

At around 7.30 pm yesterday, the occupants of the 79 Dennis Street, Campbellville, Georgetown apartment building rushed out of their living quarters.

Vernita (only name given) last night told Stabroek News she was praying in the front room of the upper flat of the building when she noticed “a bright red downstairs.” According to the mother of two, she first thought it was a piece of clothing but later smelt something burning and recognized it was a fire.

The woman said she called out to her sons who were having dinner and they rushed out of the building. She explained that her elder son ran to the Campbellville fire service and summoned them to the scene.

“They come quick and break in the downstairs from the side but the downstairs deh totally bun up…nothing was saved”, the woman recalled.

She explained that none of the three occupants who resided in the bottom flat was home at the time of the fire.

Two fire tenders from the fire service headquarters raced to the scene and assisted in putting out the blaze.

Fire fighters believe that the fire may have been electrical in origin.
