Chess federation seeks to establish chess and scholastic centre

The Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) plans to integrate chess in schools and to establish a chess and scholastic centre to be named after former national champion Maurice Broomes.

This is according to a press release from the new executive of the GCF headed by new president James Bond.

According to the release, the executive committee of the GCF met with

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Nicolette Henry who pledged her support to the new executive.

Representi­ng the GCF were Attorney at Law, Bond; Frankie Farley; Vice President of Developmen­t, Attorney at Law, Yolander Persaud; Vice President of Sponsorshi­p and Finance and Committee Member Anthony Drayton.

According to the release, Henry was “was enthused by the federation’s plans to focus on increasing female participat­ion by hosting women’s tournament and piquing the interest of young girls across Guyana.”

Henry, the release added, “pledged her support in assisting the federation in acquiring a home for its activities and also making provision for other board games such as scrabble to have a permanent and conducive space.”

Henry also indicated that her ministry was “in the process of building capacity amongst her staff to better manage such facilities in order to guarantee optimum involvemen­t and deliverabl­es in and from the use of such facilities,” stated the release.

She also pledged her full support to the work of the federation and indicated that her ministry has an open door for the GCF and any other sport discipline, stated the release.
