Cane cutter alleged to have chopped off ex’s hand in police custody

The cane cutter who allegedly chopped off the hand of his children’s mother was turned over to the police by his brother yesterday afternoon.

According to a police source, the man was taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, East Coast Demerara, by his brother and is currently in police custody.

According to informatio­n reaching Stabroek News, 28-year-old Alana Hazel, a police constable who is attached to the Police Officers’ Mess, Eve Leary was on her way to give her son some school supplies on Sunday afternoon when the man attacked her.

While Hazel has three children with the man, they had separated a few months ago, after sharing a lengthy, rocky relationsh­ip. She subsequent­ly went to live with someone else.

“The other two children went to Berbice and is the one who write common entrance that she went to go by and give a bag, but when she called the child out and was giving he, the man run out and chop she hand off,” Stabroek News was told by a relative of the woman, who did not want to be named.

After being attacked by the man, the relative related, Hazel ran and plunged into a nearby trench, hoping that would halt the attack. However, the man jumped in behind her and dealt her several more chops before running off into the backlands.

The woman was then rushed to the hospital by neighbours where she went through emergency surgery. She is currently a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital where she is recovering.
