Two in custody over Covent Garden student murder

The police have two suspects in custody in connection with the murder of Covent Garden student Brian Charles Yearwood, who was stabbed on Saturday night while attending a school concert and a knife suspected to be the murder weapon has been found at the house of one of the suspects.

Commander of ‘A’ Division Marlon Chapman told Stabroek News yesterday that the police have two persons of interest in custody. He said that at this time the police are not looking for anyone else in connection with the murder of Yearwood and added that investigat­ions are ongoing.

According to the police statement, on Sunday, Yearwood, 16, of 69 Public Road, Grove, East Bank Demerara, was stabbed once to his chest, allegedly by a 17-year-old boy of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara.

Yearwood, a student of Covent Garden Secondary School was attending a school concert in the Covent Garden Nursery School compound when the incident occurred.

According to a police source, four teens were taken into custody over the stabbing but two were later released after questionin­g. The source had informed that Yearwood was discovered lying on the ground by an off-duty police constable and was rushed to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital where he later succumbed.

Stabroek News understand­s that according to two other teens who were with Yearwood at the time, four males who they identified to the police, went up to Yearwood and one dealt him a cuff. After the fight the four youths ran away.

Yearwood’s body is currently at the Lyken’s Funeral Parlour. A postmortem examinatio­n is expected to be conducted tomorrow.
