Man remanded over murder of wife at Amelia’s Ward

-

Michael London, the man accused of fatally stabbing his wife of four years on Friday was yesterday read the charge of murder and remanded to prison.

The police said that London, 35, a porknocker appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Wales Magistrate’s Court and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

He was remanded and the matter was transferred to the Linden Magistrate’s Court for June 27.

A post-mortem examination performed yesterday on the remains of Shanika revealed that she died as a result of multiple incised wounds.

Shanika, 37, a clothes vendor of Lot 1206 Central Amelia’s Ward, Mackenzie, Linden died on Friday afternoon after she was stabbed several times about her body allegedly by Michael. She was taken to the Mackenzie Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The accused who managed to flee the scene after the incident was apprehended by the police the said afternoon. During his arrest, he allegedly violently attacked police ranks and was shot once in his leg.

The police in a press release had said that following the attack, Shanika, who was drenched in blood, ran across to her neighbour for assistance but she collapsed outside the yard.

This newspaper had previously reported that after rushing to her neighbour for assistance, Shanika

traced the words “my husband” in the sand and then collapsed.

The couple reportedly shared an abusive relationship and Michael was described as a jealous man who would often times accuse Shanika of having extramarital relations.

The dead woman’s eldest child, Dimitri Adams, had related to Stabroek News that he was attending classes at the Linden Technical Institute when he received a call from his aunt, who informed him about what had transpired.

Adams said that his mother was in an abusive relationship with the suspect and whenever he and his siblings attempted to report the attacks to the police, she would plead with them not to.

“Several times before this he hit my mother, but she does beg me not to tell anyone but I does confront my other siblings and so and every time we mention that we going and report to the police she would beg us not to,” he had said. “One time he hit my mother and I had to defend her,” he added.
