GuySuCo to lease lands to cane farmers at Uitvlugt Estate

-

The Board of Directors of the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc. (GuySuCo) has approved as part of the Uitvlugt Estate Improvement Programme for interested cane farmers with the requisite capacity to be leased lands at Uitvlugt Estate.

According to a media release from GuySuCo yesterday, a significant percent of the canes that were milled at Wales Factory are closer to Uitvlugt Estate and will now be transported to and milled at Uitvlugt factory. Cane farmers who were further away from Uitvlugt Estate, who found it uneconomical to transport their canes to Uitvlugt factory are encouraged to apply to lease lands from Uitvlugt Estate.

The GuySuCo press release stated that the factory at Uitvlugt Estate is configured differently from the Wales Estate factory, hence modifications are currently being done to enable the factory to accommodate farmers’ canes delivered in trailers. The Wales Estate factory had a cane gantry capable of unloading punts and tractor/trailer units, whereas, at present, Uitvlugt factory can only unload punts via its punt dumper.

The modifications at Uitvlugt Estate, according to the media bulletin, are contracted to be done by Nabi Construction Inc. and include the relocation of the cane gantry, cane scale, feeder table and auxiliary carrier from Wales’ factory to Uitvlugt, and is projected to be completed in time for the commencement of the second crop at Uitvlugt.

According to the GuySuCo statement a temporary trailer parking area and wooden bridge across an irrigation canal is also scheduled to be completed in time for the start of the second crop, and will be done by the estate. The permanent trailer park, concrete bridge over the irrigation canal, upgrading of dams to all-weather roads and other infrastructure will follow in due course.
