-

A farmer was arrested on Monday afternoon after he allegedly attempted to bribe two police officers for the release of his brother, who was recently sentenced to two years in jail on a wounding charge.

According to a police statement, the 36-year-old man, who hails from Champagne, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara, was taken into custody after he allegedly attempted to bribe two ranks stationed at the Mahaicony Police Station.

The man’s brother, Bishomit Rajkumar, the police said, was arrested around 4 pm on Monday on an arrest warrant. He was sentenced in absentia on May 12 for unlawfully wounding Asif Alli, of Champagne, Mahaicony.

Rajkumar, the statement said, was in custody awaiting an escort to the Georgetown Prison to commence his two-year sentence when his brother allegedly offered a $150,000 bribe to secure his release. Police said the man is scheduled to appear in court soon, while the money has been lodged.

This incident is the third such case to come to light this month. Just last week, a Mahaica resident was arrested after she allegedly offered $525,000 to an investigating rank at the Mahaica Police Station to forego charges against her husband, who was arrested with an unlicensed .32 pistol as well as a quantity of ammunition of varying calibres.

Earlier this month, a man was also arrested after he allegedly tried to bribe a police officer with $500,000 to secure the release of his son, who had been arrested over the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. In both cases, charges have been laid.
