Cop cleared of threatening civilian
-due to no-show complainant
Frank Thompson, the Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) who was recorded in February verbally threatening a civilian, had the charge dismissed yesterday for want of prosecution.
Thompson, 29, of 154 Stewartville, West Coast Demerara, was cleared by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan of the offence of using threatening language to civilian Hemchand Budhai. It was alleged that on February 22, at Broad Street, Georgetown, he made use of threatening language to Budhai.
When the case was called, Budhai was again a noshow, prompting the Chief Magistrate to dismiss the matter for “want of prosecution.”
In addition to the threatening language charge, Thompson was also charged with abusing a junior rank, Police Constable Leandre Gillis, and that case is still pending.
In a six-minute video, which was circulated widely on Facebook, Thompson was heard constantly blurting out threatening and abusive language to at least two junior ranks of the Guyana Police Force, who were investigating an accident.
He was heard verbally abusing a junior rank who had taken his driver’s licence. The rank was heard requesting the ASP to drive to the Ruimveldt Police Station but he refused. “Hello police wuh I do wrong?” was what the ASP continuously asked, while making use of indecent language. The ASP further told the constable to “Find out about me, buddy.”
