Thousands participated in this year’s Candlelight Vigil

-

Dear Editor,

Held on September 10 to mark World Suicide Prevention Day, the Second Annual Anti-Violence Candlelight Vigil, saw over 50 partners organize about 200 vigils throughout Guyana.

An initiative of Voices Against Violence, a collaboration of over 50 partners, this year’s event spanned Corriverton to Mabaruma and Charity. Partners were drawn from all ten administrative regions and included NGOs, faithbased organizations, community-based organizations, special interest groups (including youth and women’s groups), Regional Democratic Councils, Neighbourhood Democratic Councils, businesses, media, religious institutions and political parties.

Thousands of persons participated, many cultural programmes were held, and in some cases, snacks were provided. Community togetherness was reinforced and social activism given a boost.

Indeed vigils bring people together. And this Annual Anti-Violence Candlelight Vigil is an attempt to get communities across Guyana involved in antiviolence activism while fostering the concept of communal action for community well-being.

It is an inexpensive and easy to organize event. Thus Voices Against Violence invites those not yet involved to join in this initiative for

September 10, 2018.

Yours faithfully, Annan Boodram For the 50 Partners in Voices Against Violence
