Turbo Energy Drink knockout football tournament launched

- Mendonca says Guyana Beverage Company’s investment a shot in the arm for football

The inaugural Petra Organizati­on coordinate­d, Turbo Energy Drink knockout football tournament, was officially launched yesterday at the Guyana Beverage Company Incorporat­ed’s Diamond, East Bank Demerara headquarte­rs.

The competitio­n, which commences October 4, is set to be contested in an eliminatio­n format among 16 teams from Georgetown, West Demerara, East Coast and East Bank Demerara areas.

The tournament will run for one month.

Beacons FC, Pele, Northern Rangers, Santos, Riddim Squad, Georgetown Football Club (GFC), Eastveldt, and Camptown, Flamingo, Guyana Police Force (GPF) and Western Tigers are the teams from Georgetown while West Demerara’s representa­tives are Uitvlugt and Pouderoyen FC.

Ann’s Grove and Mahaica Determinat­ors are the East Coast of Demerara competitor­s while the East Bank of Demerara will be represente­d by Grove HiTech.

Troy Mendonca, Co-Director of the Petra Organizati­on said that the company’s involvemen­t in the tournament “is a shot in the arm for the sport,” while thanking the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) for its continued support.

GFF President Wayne Forde praised the entity for its timely investment and said that he hopes other local companies will recognize the efforts being made by the Guyana Beverage Company, an establishm­ent which has its parent company in Trinidad and Tobago, to develop sports.

He also lauded the work being done by the Petra Organizati­on which has… “singlehand­edly revived football in Guyana,” declaring that the organizers have been the perfect example for its membership to aspire to and that the GFF will continue to support the entity in any way possible.

Robert Selman, General Manager of the Guyana Beverage Company said that the company has always been a supporter of sports and is the first major enterprise to support a football club (Fruta Conquerors).

According to Selman, the company has always given back through education and sports following approval from the parent company SM Jaleel, with the main objective of taking youths off the streets.

Samuel Arjoon, Turbo Commercial Manager, said sports play an integral role in the developmen­t of individual­s at every level, adding that the country possess many talented athletes despite the lack of proper facilities.

He said that the company was pleased to be associated with the tournament as they are fulfilling their mandate of developing the human capital through sports and education.
