Cocaine vanishes from police HQ

-

The Police Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) has launched an investigation into the disappearance of a quantity of cocaine from Police Headquarters, Eve Leary on Tuesday.

A reliable source yesterday told Stabroek News that the cocaine which was lodged after being tendered as evidence was discovered missing on Tuesday.

Several ranks attached to the Police narcotics branch are being questioned, the source said.

Reports reaching this newspaper revealed that the illegal substance had been seized from expoliceman Travis Mendonca, 31, a resident of Linden who was recently sentenced to three years imprisonment for having just over three pounds of cocaine in his possession.

Ranks attached to the police narcotics branch about two weeks ago arrested Mendonca at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri after the cocaine was found hidden in his suitcase.

At the time of the discovery, Mendonca was an outgoing passenger destined for United States of America.

He had appeared in the Providence Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded guilty to the charge.

Another individual, Delvor Bunbury, is wanted by the police in relation to the said discovery.

On September 15, the police had issued a wanted bulletin for twenty-sevenyear-old Bunbury, a resident of 37 Victoria Road, Plaisance, East Coast Demerara.
