UG, GCC and Transport record wins over the weekend

The University of Guyana (UG), the Georgetown Cricket Club (GCC) and the Transport Sports Club (TSC) were all in the winner’s row as action continued in the New Building Society (NBS), Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) second division competition over the weekend.

UG got past Everest by four wickets to continue their unbeaten run coasting to their second consecutive win of the competition.

Everest was bundled out for 162 in the 36th over after being inserted with Saheed Mohamed (40) top scoring for the home side. His innings included five fours and a maximum and he received support from Ronaldo Renee (33) and Kevin Paul (31).

UG’s bowling was once again led by off-spinner Dwayne Dodson who grabbed 3-45 from eight overs while Linden Austin supported with 3-24 from six overs.

The students in response, reached their target, (164 – 6) in 29.5 overs with major contributions coming from Keron Sewnarine (43 not out), Dodson (29) and Melroy Stephenson (26). Spinner Javed Rasheed took 3-34.

Meanwhile, GCC got the better of arch-rivals Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) in a low-scoring affair. DCC, after being sent in, were dismissed for a paltry 121 in 27. 2 overs after being 101 – 2 at one point of their innings. Nkosie Beaton (40) and Alphius Bookie (32) received starts but failed to carry on.

Devon Lord (4-9) and off-spinner Chetram Persaud (3-33) did the damage for GCC who then reached 121 – 4 with Marlon Persaud top scoring with 38 which included four fours and two maximums.

The final match saw TSC upstaging a strong Police unit by four wickets. Police, after winning the toss managed 205 before being dismissed in the 39th over. Andrew Lyght Jr., was in fine form, smashing 61 while national under – 19 opener Alex Algoo made 37. Rafael Singh (3-39), Shaun Massiah (3-45) and Kevin Ross 234 led TSC’s bowling effort.

An unbeaten 49 from Charwayne McPherson then completed the victory as TSC reached 208-6 in 36.2 overs. McPherson got support from Ryan Hemraj (48), and Akeem Redman (24) in the four-wicket win as off-spinner Kelvin Leitch took 2-35.
