The Guyana Rugby Football Union (GRFU) with sponsorship from Scotiabank held a Get into Rugby (GIR) U/16 festival featuring teams from the Georgetown Zone last Saturday.

Four male teams playing 10s and two female teams playing 7s rugby participated.

According to a release from the union, pace, dexterity and skillful tackling were in abundance as the enthusiasm of the young ruggers highlighted the positive efforts of the Youth Development Officers (YDO) to increase participation of the game at the schools level.

The talent and skills on display is testimony to the programme slowly taking form and transcending towards seeing the growing sport played among all of the regions, the release stated.

Male teams battling it out were Queen’s College, St. John’s College, Sophia Community and Tucville Secondary. Two other teams were unable to attend.

The female teams were Tucville Secondary and St. John’s College who played each other in a best-ofthree format.

At the end of an exciting day’s matches, Sophia Community Combined team narrowly defeated Queen’s College in the final by a single try 5 – 0 in the dying minutes of the game to capture the Region 4 Georgetown zone U/16 title. The male MVP was Joel Blacks while the female MVP was A. Alleyne.

Of extreme interest was the participation of the girls. Another tournament is set for sometime this month end featuring U/14 level tag rugby.
