State-of-the-art Green Market for Bartica
Residents of Bartica will soon be the beneficiaries of a state- of- the- art ‘ green’ market when the current facility undergoes major rehabilitation works in a few weeks.
“We also intend [that] it not just be a place for selling goods and acquiring products that you need, but we also want to ensure that our marketplace can be a tourism point within our municipality, “Bartica’s Town Clerk, Phebe Wallerson was quoted as saying in a recent interview with the Department of Public Information (DPI).
According to a DPI press release, Wallerson said that the estimated cost of the works which will commence in few weeks is $20 million, and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. The Town Clerk noted that the Region Seven market had been neglected for some time now.
“… that the council has to play its role in ensuring they [the vendors] are able to inhabit a facility that lends to the development of their businesses,” Wallerson was quoted as saying, in the DPI release.
In the interview, Wallerson also disclosed that an all-purpose court for the youths of the community was being developed at the community centre through a grant provided by the Department of Culture, Youth and Sport.
Mayor Gifford Marshall, also in a recent interview with the DPI, said that the Bartica Golden Beach Boulevard project which commenced last month was 40 percent complete and thus far, five mini-marts had been constructed and works have commenced on the walkway.
According to the DPI media release, the contract for the latter project was one of seven signed under the Ministry of Communities’ Community Infrastructural Improvement Project (CIIP) earlier in the year. Contractor Ivor Allen is currently carrying out the project at a cost of $40.8 million.
