Contract of $57.5M awarded for immigratio­n buildings at Ordinance Fortlands

Government has moved one step closer to fulfilling its promise of making government services more readily available to residents of Berbice, according to Minister of State Joseph Harmon.

Harmon told reporters last Thursday at a post-Cabinet press conference that Cabinet has granted a no-objection to a $57,553,455 contract for the constructi­on of immigratio­n buildings at tract ‘MC’ Ordinance Fortlands, Berbice. The contract, which was awarded to M and P Investment­s by the Ministry of Citizenshi­p, was one of several granted no-objections at last Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting.

Harmon explained that the new office, which will be located in a central part of Corentyne between New Amsterdam and Corriverto­n, is a partial fulfilment of a commitment made to provide better facilities to Berbice.

“We promised the citizens of Berbice we would build for them a modern space where all immigratio­n services would be provided. These are practical measures we are putting in place,” he explained. He also noted that the country’s LTE (Long Term Evolution) network is expected to be a major contributo­r to the provision of these services.

Other contracts announced included one valued, US$102,000.00, which was awarded to A.A. LAQUIS Limited of Trinidad by the Ministry of Public Health for the procuremen­t and delivery of public medical supplies.

The Ministry of Education also awarded two contracts. The first, $26,186,068, was for the constructi­on of a new maintenanc­e building at the University of Guyana and it was awarded to M and P Investment­s, while the second, valued $18,507,900, was awarded to Kascon Engineerin­g Service for the extension of the University of Guyana library at its Berbice Campus.

The Ministry of Public Security also awarded a contract, valued $17,521,314, to Gharbarran Constructi­on for the rehabilita­tion of living quarters at the Beterverwa­gting and Cove and John police stations.

The Ministry of Communitie­s also awarded a $33,216,374 contract to K and P Project Management for rehabilita­tion works at the Mahdia Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Agricultur­e awarded a contract to General Engineerin­g and Supplies Services Incorporat­ed in the sum of $334, 922,700 for the constructi­on of a sluice and pump station at Herstellin­g, East Bank Demerara and the Guyana Energy Agency has awarded Standby Power Engineerin­g Company (SPECOM) an $87,500,000 contract for the supply and installati­on of 18 grid-connected solar photovolta­ic systems.
