UDFA GT Beer tournment kicks off Sunday

The fifth annual Upper Demerara Football Associatio­n (UDFA)/GT Beer football championsh­ip, was officially launched Tuesday in Linden. The 10-team event will officially kickoff on Sunday at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, with two matches.

The participan­ts are defending champion Silver Shattas, three time former champ Winners Connection, Topp XX, Netrockers, Kwakwani, Amelia’s Ward, Botofago, Blueberry Hill, Eagles and HiStars. The complete list of playing dates are December 19th, 13th, 17th, 22nd, 27th, with the grand finale on January 1st.

Terrence Mitchell, UDFA President said that the event is part of the organizati­on’s plans to develop football in the region, adding that he expects the event to be well supported by the respective communitie­s.

Meanwhile, Banks DIH Limited Communicat­ions Manager Troy Peters said, “Our commitment to Region Ten is evident as we continue to foster closer relationsh­ips with the residents of this community.”

He added, “Apart from the annual GT Beer tournament, Banks DIH also sponsored the just concluded Inter-Associatio­n tournament organized by the UDFA which has showcased some of the nation’s top players. We look forward to another very exciting tournament this year.”

Also present at the launch were GT Beer Brand Manager Jeoff Clement, Outdoor Events Manager Mortimer Stewart and other executives of the UDFA. More than $2,000,000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs.

Meanwhile, the UDFA officially pocketed their prize monies for winning the GT Beer Intra-Associatio­n Football Championsh­ip. The UDFA, the organizer of the event, pocketed the GT Beer Trophy and $1,000,000.

West Demerara received $600,000 and the runners-up accolade, while Essequibo walked away with $400,000 and the third place trophy.
