Cops charged with stealing $500,000 from miner

-

Two police constables were yesterday charged with stealing $500,000 from a gold miner.

Delon Saunders, 24, of 75 Dr Charles Housing Scheme, Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara, and Tevon Headley, 23, of Lot 31 Republic Avenue, Mackenzie, Linden, were taken before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in Georgetown, where the charge was read.

The charge states that on October 11, at Bartica, Region Seven, the defendants stole $500,000, which was the property of miner Rayad Atkinson.

Neither of the two defendants, who are attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU), was asked to plead to the charge, which is indictable.

Attorney Mark Conway, who represented the two accused, told the court that his clients are not a flight risk and should be granted reasonable bail.

Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers made no objection to bail being granted. He then requested that the duo report once a week to the investigating rank at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Jeffers also reported that the case file is complete.

Chief Magistrate McLennan later adjourned the matter until December 15, when it is expected to be called at Bartica.

Each of the defendants was granted $70,000 bail with the condition that he report every Friday to CID headquarters until the completion of the trial.

A third suspect, Nigel Harris, who is also a policeman, was also called a defendant in the matter, however, the investigating rank indicated that the accused never reported to Eve Leary yesterday morning. The court heard that the absent defendant, along with the other accused, were on open arrest.
