West Coast Berbice man remanded over waitress murder

A Number 5 Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB) man was yesterday remanded at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court over the murder of Marissa Fraser, 22, a waitress, whose body with multiple stab wounds was discovered in a trench at Number 4 Village (WCB) on Monday morning.

Odit Thom also known as `Persaud’, 38, a security guard of Lot 47 Number 5 Village yesterday appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver, where he was read the charge of murder.

The charge read that the accused between Sunday December 3 and Monday December 4 murdered Fraser.

Thom who was unrepresen­ted was remanded to prison. He will return to court on January 24. It was also ordered that an evaluation be done of Thom to ensure he is of sound mind.

Fraser’s body was discovered by passers-by sometime around 7 am. She had several stab wounds on her face, hand and abdomen. Her undergarme­nt was also missing.

Police had placed three persons in custody for questionin­g, one on Monday and two on Tuesday, after which the suspect confessed to the crime.

Her family on Monday had told Stabroek News that Fraser had left home on Sunday around 7 pm and returned around midnight.

According to the relatives, Fraser then hurriedly ventured out once more. They had suspected that someone was waiting on her outside.

A post-mortem examinatio­n was done on the body of Fraser which revealed that she died as a result of asphyxia and drowning compounded by multiple incised wounds.
