Rosignol United, Hopetown FC score lopsided wins

Rosignol United and Hopetown FC secured lopsided wins when the GT Beer Berbice 8-a-side football tournament continued on Sunday at the Scott’s School ground, New Amsterdam (NA).

The West Coast Berbice unit mauled Republican FC 7-1. The contest was effectivel­y sealed in the first half when Rosignol romped to a 3-0 advantage.

Cornel Taylor opened the scoring in the third minute before Keron Arthur, recorded two goals of his eventual hat-trick in the 20th and 24th minute.

Upon the resumption of the second half, Royan Solomon scored in the 28th minute before O’Connor Ridley netted in the 32nd minute to make it 5-0.

Republican FC recorded a consolatio­n goal in the 41st minute through James Isaacs.

However, Rosignol completed their victory after Arthur scored his third goal in the 42nd minute and Shane Gangoo netted five minutes later.

Similarly, Hopetown FC dismissed Berbice Police 4-0. An own goal in the 23rd minute broke the deadlock for Hopetown, before Kishawn Walters doubled their lead with a 33rd minute strike.

The score line ballooned once more in the 36th minute, as Justin Williams scored. The result was then sealed in 50th+2 minute, as Jarrell Rodney found the back of the net.

The tournament resumes on Friday at the same venue with the final round of group matches. In the opening match at 19:30hrs, Mahaica battle Golden Stars.

The second match will pit Mahaicony FC against Corriverto­n Links from 20:30hrs, while in the feature clash, Soccer City will lock horns with Young Strikers at 21:30hrs.

Winner of the event will receive $500,000 and the championsh­ip trophy, while the runner-up will pocket $300,000 and the correspond­ing accolade.

On the other hand, the third place finisher will receive $100,000 and a trophy.

On the individual side, the Highest Goal Scorer and the Best Goalkeeper will pocket $50,000 each. The tournament is also sponsored by Fly Jamaica.
