Corentyne labourer critical after fall from old psychiatri­c building

A Corentyne labourer is in a critical condition after he fell from the building which once housed the National Psychiatri­c Hospital located in Fort Canje, Berbice.

Christophe­r Singh, 20, of Lot 14 Maida Village, Corentyne was rushed to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital around 3.15 pm yesterday after he fell from the second floor while in the process of demolishin­g the old building. Stabroek News was told that Singh was still unresponsi­ve as of press time. He is said to have sustained a major head injury, broken bones and other injuries about his body.

The contractor, Bansingh Guyadeen, who employed Singh along with others to demolish the old building, stated that Singh fell from the second floor where he was working at the time. The man said, “When he slip out the beam, a wall cave in and he fall through inside”.

According to the contractor, other workers on the site immediatel­y rushed to his aid and offered assistance.

Meanwhile, Singh’s wife, Wazina Ally noted, that she last saw her husband yesterday morning when he left for work. She said that she is hoping her husband makes a full recovery.

Speaking to Stabroek News last evening the woman explained that her husband was still unresponsi­ve at that time and would likely be transferre­d to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
