The men, Parmanand Samaroo, 23, self-employed, of Lot 16, Ogleton Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, and Ravendranauth Samaroo, 26, a pork knocker of Timmers Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, faced two charges of robbery under arms when they appeared before Magistrate Alex Moore.

The first charge read that the men in company of another, on Wednesday February 7, in Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam gained entry armed with a dangerous and offensive weapon, a knife and robbed Jimmy Mohabir of three gold chains worth $500,000, four gold chains worth $482,000 and $350,000 in cash, for a total value of $1,332,000.

However, a second charge was subsequently read to them which stated that on February 7, in Angoy’s Avenue, the men gained entry, armed with guns and knives and robbed Ghansham Rai of a cellphone worth $10,000, a flashlight valued at $2,000 and $1,200 in cash, a total of $15,200.

Both men plead not guilty to the second charge.

Police Prosecutor, Lennox Poliah asked for bail to be denied for both accused based on the seriousness of the offences. He pointed out that after allegedly committing the crimes, the men were on the run. In addition, Poliah argued that Ravendranauth, who works in the interior, is likely to flee the jurisdiction if placed on bail.Magistrate Moore then denied bail and remanded both men to prison.A third accused, Gobin Mc Donald, 39, a labourer, of Angoy’s Avenue was charged last week with robbing Mohabir.

All three men will return to the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on March 7, where it is expected that the charges will be instituted jointly against them
