Kobras, Guardians win as GABA knockout tourney commences

Kobras defeated Pacesetter­s in a second division encounter while Plaisance Guardians downed Sonics in an U23 matchup when the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Federation (GABA) knockout tournament commenced Monday.

Guardians prevailed over Pacesetter­s 59-52 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretc­h Avenue. Amoniki John recorded a game-high 16 points in the hard-fought win.

He was assisted by the trident of Patrick John, Rondell Wilson and Selwyn McAllister, who contribute­d 11, 10 and nine points respective­ly.

For Pacesetter­s, Quincy DosSantos netted 15 points while Zion Gray, Kwesi Roberts and Stephen Peters supported with 10, eight and six points each.

The first period highlighte­d the cagey and competitiv­e nature of the contest as Pacesetter­s secured a slim 13-12 advantage.

The Georgetown unit maintained their lead in the second quarter, outscoring their opponent 13-11 to enter the halftime interval ahead 26-23.

However, the momentum changed in the third quarter with Kobras netting 14 points while restrictin­g Pacesetter­s to 10 points for a one-point lead 3736. The victory was then sealed in the final quarter as Kobras outhustled their opponent 22-16.

Meanwhile, Plaisance Guardians brushed aside Sonics 81-62.

Leading 21-17 at the end of the first quarter, Guardians commenced their domination in the second period, outscoring Sonics 19-8 to lead 40-25 at halftime.

Guardians maintained their control in an evenly contested third period, out-shooting their foe 20-19 to enter the final period leading 60-44 where the result was finalized with Guardians outscoring Sonics 22-18.

Anton Fileen top scored with 20 points with Nigel Bowen and Terrence Daniels adding 14 and 11 points respective­ly.

Chipping in with nine, six and five points respective­ly were Andrew Johnson, Jared Sears and Akeem Crandon.

For Sonics, Manasseh Murray and Lemuel Grant battled to 15 and 13 points each.

Supporting with eight, six and five points apiece were Shemon Sharples, Shemar Keiler and Jacques Vicente. The tournament continues today at the same venue with another round of matches.

Eagles will oppose Guardians at 18:30hrs in a second division match while Kobras will match skills with the University of Guyana (UG) Trojans from 20:30hrs.
