Defending champs Colts to face Plaisance Guardians in feature match

The fifth annual Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) ‘Road to Mecca’ Club Championsh­ips will continue today at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretc­h Avenue with three group matches.

In the opening matchup, Eagles will oppose Pacesetter­s from 18:00hrs while newcomer Kobras will face-off with Nets from 20:00hrs.

In the feature contest, Plaisance Guardians will lock horns with two time defending champion Colts at 22:00hrs. The tournament continues tomorrow at the same venue with another four matches.

The competing teams have been divided into two groups of six and the group winners and runners-up will advance to the semi-finals.

Group-1 features two time defending champion Colts, Half Mile Bulls [Linden], Plaisance Guardians, Retrieve Raiders [Linden], Ravens and the lone Berbice representa­tive (Winner between Canje Knights and Hopetown Steelers).

Group-2 consists of Victory Valley Royals [Linden], Nets, Pacesetter­s, Amelia’s Ward Jets [Linden], Eagles and Kobras.

The other playing dates are the 13th, 14th, 15th, 20th, 21st, with the semifinals slated for the 22nd and the grand finale penciled for the 28th.

The winning team will pocket $600,000 and a trophy the runners-up will receive $400,000 and a trophy and the third place finishers $300,000 and a trophy.

The Most Valuable Player will receive $200,000 while $100,000 each will be awarded to the individual­s with the most points and the most rebounds along with the most improved player.
