CJIA sees record high passenger movement in first quarter

-

The Cheddi Jagan International Airport Corporation (CJIAC) recorded the highest ever passenger movement through the airport in the first quarter of 2018.

The CJIAC, in a press release on Thursday, said that for the period of January, 2018 to March, 2018, 142,781 passengers were processed in comparison with 126,340 for the same period in 2017.

It added that for March, 52,729 passengers were processed, compared with the 43,733 processed for the same month in 2017.

The release said Public Infrastructure Minister David Patterson credited the increases to government’s “sound economic policies” and “its unwavering advocacy for an enabling environment for investors.”

He also said other factors that contributed to the increases included increased business interest in oil and gas, and agriculture, investment forums, and tourists coming in large numbers for the Easter festivities, including the Bartica Regatta and the Rupununi rodeo.

The airport is currently being expanded under an ongoing US$150 million project, which the CJIA said is to accommodate additional traffic that is anticipated in the coming years.

The project, which is well on its way towards completion, will include several state-of-the-art facilities and amenities, and the strengthening of the airport’s capacity.
