Youth gets bail on ganja trafficking charge

-

A youth was yesterday placed on $200,000 bail after he denied having possession of a quantity of cannabis that was found in a vehicle in which he was travelling.

The charge against Junior Wilson, 19, stated that on May 18th, at Omai Landing, Essequibo River, he had 749 grammes of cannabis in his possession for trafficking.

Wilson denied the allegation. His attorney, Dexter Todd, in a bail application, stated that the suspected narcotic was not found on his client. Todd told the court that Wilson was in a van with other persons heading to the interior when police ranks stopped and searched the vehicle. The suspected narcotic was found in a cooler in the vehicle and nobody took ownership of the drug, he added.

Police Prosecutor Gordon Mansfield, however, stated that the accused admitted to having knowledge of the narcotic under caution.

Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan subsequently placed Wilson on $200,000 bail and transferred the matter to the Mahdia Magistrate’s Court, where it will be heard on July 17th.
