Convict still unconscious in hospital after prison assault

Sean Thom, a prisoner who was admitted as a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) after he was attacked at the Camp Street Prison, is still hospitalised in an unconscious state.

Thom, 22, has been hospitalised for two weeks since the attack.

He is now in the High Dependency Unit of the hospital, after being initially admitted in the Intensive Care Unit.

Despite Thom’s current state, Prisons Director Gladwin Samuels told Stabroek News that he has been showing signs of improvement and based on his doctors’ assessment he will be discharged in a matter of days.

Samuels told this newspaper that they have not been able to get a statement from the injured prisoner due to his condition.

He, however, stated that when a statement is obtained, it would advance the investigation since it is expected that he will be able to provide vital information on his attackers.

“We have spoken to the prisoners he was with and they have all denied attacking him. But we have to wait the appropriate time to take a statement from him,” he said.

Thom, who is serving two concurrent three-year sentences for unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition, was reportedly attacked on May 25th.

Samuels had said previously that based on the report he received, Thom was relocated from one section to another at the Camp Street Prison after he stabbed another prisoner with a mop stick.

During checks on May 26th, it was reported to Samuels that Thom was found with what appeared to be swelling to the face. He was referred to the GPH and the matter was reported to the police for further investigation.
