Women b/ballers lose opening match

Guyana suffered a crushing defeat in their opening match of the Caribbean Basketball Confederat­ion (CBC) Women’s Championsh­ip, losing to Barbados 79-39 on Sunday at the Anthony Nesty Sports Hall, Suriname.

Barbados led from the start in the lopsided contest, as the first quarter concluded 11-23.

The lead was built upon in the second period, as the Barbadians outscored the Guyanese 15-9 to enter the halftime interval in control at 38-20.

The contest was effectivel­y sealed in the third quarter, as Barbados tallied 18 points, while restrictin­g Guyana to seven points to lead 56-27.

Barbados then completed the score line, outclassin­g Guyana 23-12. Up to press time, the Guyanese was set to face-off with home side Suriname. They will conclude their group campaign against the Dominican Republic tomorrow at the same venue from 18:45hrs.

The team which is coached by Troy Greene, features Ginelle Ifill (Captain), Miriam McKenzie (Co-Captain), Jada Mohan, Annalisa Barclay, Saffiya Greene, Kennesha Leacock, Roschelle Campbell, Demelza Nicholas, Caron Bobb-Semple, Makeida Rogers, Cliffanna Hunter and Kesann Charles.

Dave Causeway is the Assistant Coach and Ann Gordon the Team Manager. Jonas Anestal is the Physiother­apist and Physical Conditione­r. The team is set to return home Friday.
