A 62-year-old Rosignol, West Coast Berbice man was arrested yesterday morning for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death at their Burnham Avenue abode.

According to information gathered, the duo, Leonard Allan, a pensioner and “Shabana” were engaged in a drinking spree on Tuesday.

However, a resident told Stabroek News that around 5 pm on Tuesday, Allan started to physically assault the woman since he was unhappy with the meal she had prepared for dinner.

The resident added that the couple would often fight and whenever neighbours would intervene, “... they does turn around and cuss you”.

However, she added that around 8 am she decided to venture over and have a talk with the couple. “Them does always fight like that, so me say me go a talk with he. When me call he say let me come in and when me go in he say ‘like this girl look like she dead’, the body did done cover with sheet, I tell he raise up the sheet and me see she neck twist one side and I tell he she dead,” the neighbour related.

Residents said the woman, who would come and go from Allan’s house, had told them that her name was “Shabana Babita” from Number Two Village, East Canje, Berbice.

Stabroek News visited Number Two Village yesterday and attempted to locate relatives of the woman, however, no one appeared to know of her.

“Every Friday when the man collect he money, then she a come and them a drink and sport,” said a resident.

According to information gathered, the pensioner lived at his house on Burnham Avenue, Rosignol Village, West Coast Berbice for most of his life with his wife. However, after his wife, who was ill, passed away in early February, he became involved with “Shabana”.

Meanwhile, a police source told Stabroek News that the suspect told investigators that during the wee hours of Wednesday morning, he dealt the woman a lash to her head after which she became unconscious.

The police are investigating the matter and will likely institute charges against the suspect before the end of the week.
