Blairmont Blazers hard-pressed to retain Roy Fredericks Cup

The Blairmont Center Cricket Club (BCCC) is set to unfold the fourth Roy Frederick’s Floodlight Cup Revolution on July 21.

The competitio­n is set to be a day and night affair with seven of the biggest clubs in the game locally competing for top honors, not only in cricket but volleyball and dominoes as well.

Two-time defending champions, Blairmont Blazers will be hard pressed to retain the crown. They are expected to face stiff challenges from the other teams such as, Albion Cricket Club, Demarara Cricket Club, Rose Hall Youths & Sports Club, Port Mourant Cricket Club, Young Warriors and Upper Corentyne Associatio­n.

The late former Guyana and West Indies opening batsman Roy Fredericks’s career started at BCCC. He later went on to play for the Demarara Cricket Club. BCCC executives and members have had the main pavilion named after the late, great son of the soil. Fredericks played 59 test matches scoring 4334 runs at an average of 42.49 decorated with 8 centuries and 26 half centuries. His fame grew after a innings of 169 at Perth against Australia against the likes Dennis Lillee and Jeff Thomson.

The day’s event will see lots of attraction for spectators such as Tassa Drumming, Lighted Bails, 4 and 6 fans, bowl off and spectator’s catch. There will also be live commentary by internatio­nal commentato­r Inderjeet Persaud and others.

The club executive and members are seeking sponsorshi­p and welcome any contributi­on toward the success of this event. Proceeds will go for intended purposes which is to maintain and develop the cricket club. The club main project is to build an indoor cricket facility for the club and other no-n members to combat the rainy season.
