Hetmyer, Rutherford, Malik among the runs in warm up match

- By Romario Samaroo

The Guyana Amazon Warriors Franchise could feel a sense of encouragement despite the rain interrupting their first practice match at Providence yesterday after some key players found form.

Ahead of their 2018 HERO Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title quest, West Indies and Guyana top order batsman, Shimron Hetmyer smashed a pulsating 66 as Malik’s XI raced to 187-6 in overcast conditions.

Hetmyer clobbered six fours and three sixes on the same wicket he scored his second One Day International century recently.

Meanwhile, West Indies B team all-rounder, Sherfane Rutherford further staked his claim as being a dependable batsman with a gutsy 40, a knock which included two sixes and three fours while fellow opener Luke Ronchi fell cheaply.

Late in the innings, with the side already 148 heading into the death overs, the skipper Shoaib Malik caressed the boundary ropes for a 47-run cameo.

Sohail Tanvir was among the wickets, tearing away Ronchi’s off stump as he earned himself 3-23 while Raun Johnson supported with 2-40.

In reply, newbie to the Warriors set up, Chris Green sat on a hat trick in his first over in the Caribbean, removing Akshaya Persaud and Robin Bacchus early in the piece.

Jason Mohammed’s XI sunk further into disarray with four wickets down and only 28 runs on the board at the end of the power play.

The match eventually ended because of a rain interruption with the score 58-6.

Mohammed top scored with 14 while Gajanand Singh and Tanvir stroked 10 and 12 respectively. Green and Devindra Bishoo both ended with 210.

The Guyana Amazon Warriors will play another warm up match today at 18:00h before their first match of the CPL on Thursday.
