Guyana names Caribbean School Boys Championsh­ip team

The Guyana Boxing Associatio­n (GBA) has named its team that will represent Guyana at the Caribbean Schoolboys and juniors boxing championsh­ips set for Guyana next weekend.

According to correspond­ence from GBA President, Steve Ninvalle, the team was selected after the associatio­n hosted a two-day boxoff at the Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Gym, Albouystow­n over the weekend.<None>

In the juniors division, it is no surprise that Christophe­r Romeo, out of the Vergenoege­n Boxing Gym (VBG) will lead the charge in the 45-57KG class after being adjudged the best junior boxer in the competitio­n.

Forgotten Youths Foundation (FYF) will see three of their youngsters also in the mix, including Most Improved Boxer, Richard Howard in the 44-46KG class, runner up, Mark Crawford in the 57-60KG and 16-yearold second generation boxer Leon Moore in the 46-48KG division. Young Achievers (YA) duo, Jamal Mercer and 15-year-old Emanuel Pompey along with CBG’s Jevon Thomas will compete in the 60-64KG, 64-69Kg and 6975KG divisions respective­ly.

In the Schoolboys category, Joel Anthony (Harpy Eagles), Enoch Monroe (Harpy Eagles), Deron William (VBG), 52-54KG Patrick Harvey (FYF) and 54-57KG Kurt Beckles (Harpy Eagles) will lead Guyana’s charge.

Germain Williams (VBG) and Shemar Morrison (FYF) will be the two novices in competitio­n in the 6064KG and 69-75KG class respective­ly while Alesha Jackman will be the lone 12-14 year-old female, alongside Savannah Boxing Gym’s Jelica Rodney who will be in the 15-16 year-old division and Akea Lamazon of Pocket Rocket Boxing Gym in the 17-18 year-old group.

The team will be coached by Sebert Blake (TD), Clifton Moore (VBG), James Walcott (Harpy Eagles), Joseph Murray (FYF) and Floyd Grant (CBG).

The championsh­ips will see 10 countries invading the National Gymnasium for the three-day contest beginning on Friday and concluding on Sunday.
