Guyana Under – 11 boys capture bronze

Guyana’s boys’ Under – 11 table tennis unit, captured the nation’s lone medal – bronze - in the team’s event of the ongoing Caribbean Mini-Cadet and Pre-Cadet championsh­ips currently being played in the Dominican Republic.

Guyana defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-1 after Colin Wong downed Bruce Dillon 11-8, 11-6, 11-7 while Dhanesh Persaud got past John Gabriel 10-12, 11-7, 11-4, and 11-9 to send Guyana up 2-0.

Malachi Moore, however, went down to Sekel Mc Intosh 8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-9, 7-11 before Wong defeated Gabriel 11-8, 117, 11-7 to hand Guyana the 3-1 win.

Their second and final round robin match, though, saw then going down to Jamaica 1-3.

That result left four teams on three points with Guyana winning the tiebreak and finishing third behind the host and Jamaica respective­ly.

The under – 13 boys, however, for which a lot was riding on, failed to advance from their group.

After defeating the host’s B team 3-2, they went down against Trinidad 1-3 and Puerto Rico by the same margin.

The encounter against the Twin Island Republic saw Kaysan Ninvalle defeating Jamaali Mauge 11-6, 11-9, 11-7 to take a consolatio­n win while Jonathan Van Lange lost to Jalen Kerr 14-16, 1-11, 511. The other two games saw Krystian Sahadeo surrenderi­ng to Nicholas O’Young 8-11, 12-10, 911, 9-11 and Ninvalle in the second match of the round, stopped by Kerr 1012, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 6-11.

Guyana in the Puerto Rico encounter suffered defeat by a similar score line with Ninvalle once again winning Guyana’s lone match.

He defeated John Marrero 9-11, 11-7, 11-6, 6-11, 12-10. Van Lange however lost against Giovanni Centeno 9-11, 13-11, 7-11, 11-5, 4-11 and Sahadeo was defeated by Jose Nieves 5-11, 6-11, 311 while Ninvalle and Centeno scrapped it out in a five-set match with went the latter’s way 9-11, 11-7, 13-15, 11-9, 9-11.

Meanwhile, the girls Under – 13 team finished fifth after their round-robin encounters. They were defeated by Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica 1-3, respective­ly while Puerto Rico got past then 0-3.

The Under – 11 girls team finished sixth after going down to Trinidad 23, Puerto Rico 1-3, and the Dominican Republic 1-3.
