Professional boxing to return to Sports Hall this month

Professional boxing returns to the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on September 22 with a fivefight card.

Dubbed, ‘Young Guns..The Proving Ground’ the fixture is expected to showcase some of the fresh and upcoming talent in the 592.

Two fighters, Joel Williamson (light welterweight) and Delon Charles (featherweight) will be making their professional debuts while many of the other fighters have less than a handful of fights on their respective resumes.

According to President of the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC), Peter Abdool, the card which will be staged in exactly three weeks promises to be the start of resuscitating the ‘Sweet Science’ locally.

“It is an opportunity for the Guyanese public to have a look at that talent that is here. We are very much hoping that it fills the vacuum of our young fighters sufficiently that it allows us to put it on on a regular basis so that our fighters can be active. Hopefully the activity will help in terms of the trickle down effect of helping to resuscitate our gyms, trainers and people who depend on sport.”

The card also provides an opportunity for young promoters. Dexter ‘De Kid’ Marques will be partnering with the GBBC to promote the card.

Said Abdool “This is a young generation that we are targeting here and

I have to congratulate Dexter since this will be his first time in such a capacity.” The GBBC organized event which starts at 20:00hrs, became official yesterday after the ink dried on the boxers’ respective contracts.

Admission cost is set at $1000 for stands and $2000 for ringside.
