The current and previous government have failed writers

-

Dear Editor, As I read of issues related to the Guyana Prize for Literature, I am thankful that someone in the political arena had the vision to focus attention on the development of quality literature by Guyanese, by introducing it. I think this move can be attributed to Mr Desmond Hoyte as President of Guyana.

I recall the heavy and significant attention given to the development of literature under the PNC when Mr Burnham governed. Carifesta in Burnham’s time was rich in its promotion of Caribbean literature.

I recall the History and Arts Council of Mr Burnham’s time holding training sessions for budding writers facilitated by the late poet, Dr A J Seymour and writer, Mr Sheik Sadeek. I attended the training sessions and later saw my effort bearing fruits though not to the level of the established writers in Guyana.

Guyfesta was introduced nationally through Regions’ participation. Guyfesta has left a historical mark in favour of Mr Burnham. I recall receiving a Certificate of Merit for a short story submitted.

Local literature was encouraged. Children’s pieces were published in the BIYA series.

I have yet to see again the heights reached to which Mr Burnham pushed local literature, training to ensure the best from writers.

It is my belief that the current Government and the previous have failed writers miserably! Yours faithfully, Krishna Nand Prasad
