Fire destroys upper flat of Cumberland house

A fire suspected to be of electric origin yesterday afternoon ripp through the upper flat of a tw storey house located on the ma road of Cumberland Village, Ea Canje Berbice, destroying ever thing in its path.

According to informatio­n gat ered, the fire is suspected to ha started from the fuse box locat in the upper flat of the Lot 1 Cumberland Village house.

Stabroek News was told th Nareema Mohamed, 28, ventur upstairs minutes after 4 pm a noticed a blaze coming from t fuse box and immediatel­y sound an alarm. To escape the blaze t woman was forced to jump fro the verandah to the bottom flat.

The owner of the house, Bi Shamroon Khan, 51, was dow stairs with her son, Zaheer Kha also known as “Boyo”, 30, gran children and other relatives at t time of the blaze.

Residents and passersimm­ediately rushed over and sta ed to assist and in a matter of mi utes the fire service arrived at t scene and was able to collective put out the fire and stop the bla from entering the lower flat of t house, eyewitness­es told Stabro News yesterday.

Mohamed yesterday afterno had to be rushed to the Ne Amsterdam Public Hospital, sin she was going in and out of co sciousness due to the shock of t fire.

This is the second tragedy f the family in a period of tw weeks, as only last Sunday t owner of the house, Jameer Kha was laid to rest.

The fire service has launched investigat­ion.
